Hi friends,
This week: Big news for UK science, BT opens up on its health ambitions, and clinical trial tech gets another cash injection.
News Bites 🥪
🤝 UK to re-join EU's Horizon science programme – We were in, then we were out, and yes….we probably did shake it all about. Now we’re back, and Pigeon is both delighted on behalf of the UK science and technology sector, and deeply sorry for the institutional hokey-cokey.
🔌 National immunisation system switched off just ahead of winter campaign – Pigeon doesn’t know what the fuss is about here. We’re always testing new ways of editing this newsletter just minutes before our publication deadline, and nothing’s gone wrong yet…
🚨 ERROR 404 - SNARKY HEALTHTECH STORY #3 NOT FOUND.
🔮 Sheffield Teaching first in UK to use new tool to predict kidney failure risk – End Stage Kidney disease is no joke, and the ability to identify those at risk of hitting the point of no-return in the next 5 years is a major coup for teams working on this – and their patients.
🩻 BT launches new AI and digital diagnostics services to support NHS – For some time, BT’s digital health media blitz has had us suspecting a bigger play was in the works. Now they’ve launched a service to make it easier for diagnostic teams to choose and then access AI and digital solutions. We’re hoping for a follow-up report exploring the programme impact in the near future.
📲Digital Health in the WHO European Region: the ongoing journey to commitment and transformation – a ‘Big Report™’ from the World Health Organisation takes a birds-eye view* of digital health on the continent with some startling findings: nearly half of countries have no approach to ensuring health literacy, leaving many people at risk of being left unable to benefit from advancement in digital health.
‼️ Zühlke research shows unmet demand for prescription NHS apps – Pigeon is shocked – nay, flabbergasted – that a company that builds apps for organisations including the NHS might produce research that finds there is unmet demand for such apps. That said, there are some startling figures about public trust in health apps (particularly NHS vs big tech), and how often people are self-diagnosing…
🌿 Cancer care startup Thyme Care raises $60M, beating the odds of raising a Series B during digital health’s funding slowdown – US Cancer care coordination startup Thyme Care connects patients to a care team outside of the clinic, helping them get the answers they need when they want them. They’ve raised a cool $60m in the middle of a downturn.
⚖️ Clinical trial design company QuantHealth scores $15M and more digital health fundings – Investors are making big bets on clinical trial technologies as trial numbers collapse. Quant Health are the latest company to raise off the back of this funding injection, and Pigeon hopes we start seeing a bump in trials globally soon as a result.
