Hi friends,
This week: Intrusive diagnostic tools, the NHS gets a slap on the wrist, and a protracted saga comes to an unceremonious end…
News Bites 🥪
📲 Mahana signs with Bayer to commercialise digital therapeutics - Bayer’s consumer health division takes a major step forward by inking an agreement with Mahana, in what could be a coup for people living with chronic conditions such as IBS.
⛲️ The fall of Babylon: Failed telehealth startup once valued at $2B goes bankrupt, sold for parts | TechCrunch - Babylon’s story reaches its end (at least for now). Our hearts go out to the company’s employees, many of whom will no doubt continue to play a defining role in healthtech long after the company has ceased to exist. Healthtech regulatory specialist and erstwhile Babylon employee Dr Hugh Harvey joins us on this week’s podcast to share his analysis.
🌉 The NHS Federated Data Platform: the importance of building bridges with the public - In what can only be described as a tone of polite frustration, the National Data Guardian does her best to remind the NHS that public trust is a core tenet of their use of data and technology, and with just a few months until someone (yes, them) wins the major FDP contract, maybe it’s time to start building it.
🛏️ The three steps in a successful virtual wards programme - Pigeon’s seen a lot of evidence lately that virtual wards can work. How to actually create a system in which they do work is another matter, and this excellent commentary from NHS Providers’ Sara Gariban is a great contribution to the ‘how’ question.
🤖 Huma taps Google Cloud’s generative AI tools for digital health platform - Medical Device Network - Fresh off that 510(k) class II certification that rocked the healthtech world, disease management tech developers Huma have announced they’re going to be bringing Google’s Med-PaLM tools into the platform to speed things up. When? Your guess is as good as Pigeon’s. Seriously people, we’re not covering any AI announcements without timelines attached from this moment on.
🌧️ Google Cloud, HCA team up to deploy AI in the emergency room - …fine. Another one can’t hurt. US healthcare super-provider HCA is considering rolling out Med-PaLM 2 across healthcare settings after a pilot in four hospitals found it helped HCPs to record medical information and convert text-to-speech faster than ever. It’s still not a real announcement.
🚽 4 surprising 'smart' technologies transforming health diagnostics - if you’re at all worried that tech knows too much about you, stop reading here. Otherwise, check out the watch that diagnoses Parkinson’s Disease, smart contact lenses that monitor blood glucose levels, as well as an intelligent shopping trolley and smart toilet, both of which Pigeon will let you read more about on your own steam.
⌗ Nevia Bio Secures $3M in Seed Funding to Advance Machine Learning in Women’s Health Diagnostics - could an algorithm designed to analyse vaginal excretions help save lives lost to ovarian cancer? Nevia Bio think so, and new funding will help take their technology into clinical trials.
📝 Amazon's Radical Plan for Healthcare: A La Carte Pricing - In its latest healthcare play, Amazon aims to bring the same level of choice and quality to healthcare as they have to Harlan Coben adaptations and short-lived but much loved sitcoms. Here, the startups providing the backbone of Amazon’s current healthcare proposition share their views on how the shopping giant’s experiment is going.
