Hi friends,
This week: Biases, biomarkers andβ¦brownies?
News Bites π₯ͺ
π§ This biotech startup wants to prevent unhappiness. Here's the pitch deck Matter Neuroscience used to raise $26 million β Ever wondered if there was a biomarker for happiness? Well actually, thereβs six of themβ¦ sort of. Either way, if thereβs a company doing their best to tackle unhappiness, you can bet your bottom dollar that Pigeonβs rooting for them. Have you SEEN the state of the world lately? We need all the joy we can get.
π©Ί UK report reveals bias within medical tools and devices β Medical technology? Biased towards women, ethnic minorities, and people from deprived backgrounds? Surely not? Personally, Pigeon blames the parents. The findings of a two year review of bias in medtech and AI tools confirm what many already knew: small training sets, limited trials and testing and other factors mean these groups could be at risk of receiving lower standards of care when certain technologies are deployed.
π Healthtech remains on top and UK takes its crown back: Februaryβs seed wrap-up β As healthtechβs biggest cheerleader, you can only imagine Pigeonβs gleeful beak when we read that healthtech continues to reign supreme in the Battle of βTop-Seed-Funding-Sector-in-Europe-in-February-2024β. Itβs a niche competition admittedly, but we still canβt resist a few potshots at those nerds in fintech.
π As AI develops, health systems need to focus on data quality β In what can only be bad news for the chatbot pigeon is training using only previous editions of this newsletter, it turns out data quality matters. This is perhaps even more true when referring to access and use of health data. Time to start considering this more people!
πΊ Why Womenβs Healthcare Technology Is Everyoneβs Business β Pigeon will never, EVER, pass up an opportunity to highlight the need for more women in spaces they have in many cases been excluded from. This Forbes article explains far more eloquently than Pigeon ever could, why women deserve to be in more positions of leadership and influence throughout the entire healthcare ecosystem.Β
π° Sooma gets β¬5M boost to expand its tDCS at-home depression treatment β Following a healthy cash injection that will hopefully go someway to lifting the spirits of Soomaβs finance team, the company will use this funding to alleviate depression symptoms without the need for pharmaceuticals. Itβs a much better way to spend the cash than Pigeon could think of (a lifetimeβs supply of brownies, if you must know).
π Everything you need to know to prepare for the EUβs AI Act β While the AI Act has passed its last major hurdle, thereβs still a lot thatβs up in the air β particularly for healthcare AI builders. This article goes someway to explaining everything you need to know to make sure youβre hitting the new requirements and arenβt getting yourself in trouble this the big dog!Β You know Pigeon is always going to keep one ear to the ground to give you all the tea.*Β
π» Health Secretary announces digital initiatives for NHS productivity β Hear ye, hear ye! Β£3.4B is on its way to NHS teams imminently, says the Governmentβs 374th (and maybe final) health secretary in 14 years. The promise: digital technologies, in digital hospitals, with digital operating theatres. Did we mention that they want to make things more digital?
