Hi friends,
This week: A big healthtech IPO, incentivising revolution (the digital health kind), and it’ll be a while until we’re all using VR to treat depression.
Tired eyes? 👀 Listen to the Healthtech Pigeon podcast ➡️ SomX’s Belle and Huw breakdown the best stories from this week’s newsletter. Available now on Spotify and Apple Podcasts.
News Bites 🥪
👺 Digital health: a case of mistaken identity – Answering the age old question: like, what even are digital therapeutics anyway? Dario Health’s Omar Manejwala argues it's time to take a more considered approach in where digital health interventions are focused to deliver better results for patients.
⏰ Precision medicine company Tempus AI files to go public – Another healthtech files to go public. Valued at over $8bn (really?) two years ago, the ‘Intelligent Diagnostics’ company has a mega library of clinical data at its disposal. We’re guessing this one may fare just a tad better than some of the sector’s more notable public companies..
䷰ Five ways to unlock a digital health revolution in the NHS – Pigeon was fully prepared to joke that this would just be the phrase ‘Pay for it’ repeated five times. The folks at BT resisted that temptation for an all together more well thought out set of suggestions, that still, somehow, will seem quite obvious to anyone who’s paying attention.
🗣️ 4 Things Digital Health Investors Need To Get Off Their Chest – These four things turn out to be their views on digital health funding, rather than confessions of youthful indiscretions or potentially criminal acts (disappointing, we know). The topics range from controversial, to positive, to the bloody obvious – but each is worth the 2 minutes you’ll take to read it.
🧫 These are the 13 mental health startups that could IPO, make acquisitions, or get bought this year, according to analysts – Business Insider took 13 mental health tech movers and shakers, predicted who would buy, sell or go public in the next 12 months, and then asked the companies to comment. Unsurprisingly, few did.
🕶️ Clinical adoption of virtual reality in mental health is challenged by lack of high-quality research – Pigeon’s already donning a headset before our minor operations, our surgical planning and our ketamine therapy, but is it too early for us to pop it on to help us with various mental health conditions? Honestly, we don’t know, because the research isn’t good enough….but we could do better research, argues this study.
🤔 The entrepreneurs who think AI could help save the NHS – ‘Free Doctors for all’, that’s the promise of AI according to one of the most influential investors out there. Is he right? Maybe; could AI achieve great things in healthcare either way? The people building it certainly think so.
💰 Fierce Healthcare Fundraising Tracker—Lore banks $80M to tackle loneliness; Clinical AI startup SmarterDx snags $50M – Funding may feel slow right now, but digital health companies are still hawking their wares to (occasionally) willing investors. So who’s actually picking up the cash, and what for? With $350m+ invested in the companies in this list, this may hold some answers.
🤖 Generalization—a key challenge for responsible AI in patient-facing clinical applications – Regular readers know that Pigeon is no stranger to making sweeping generalisations, some of which are about AI. But when we do it, nothing (major) breaks. Not so much when it’s the AI doing the generalising….
