Hey friends,
This week: A huge predictive AI roll-out, lack of integration causes some safety issues, and people don’t know AI is being used in healthcare.
Your friends all listen to podcasts. Feel like you’re in on the conversation by listening to the Healthtech Pigeon podcast ➡️ James chats with Sanome’s Benedikt von Thüngen. Available now on Spotify and Apple Podcasts.
News Bites 🥪
54% of Brits unaware AI is being used in healthcare, finds survey – You wouldn’t be surprised to hear AI’s being used in your care, but you read this newsletter, so you’re not exactly representative of the general public. On the other hand, its use is a surprise to more than half of us – but most of them are fine with it, if they’re honest.
NPJ Digital Medicine Study: A systematic review of quantum machine learning for digital health – Pigeon keeps being told to forget LLMs, quantum is where real transformation will happen. And it may be true, eventually. But not yet, as this review shows.
Patient record errors caused by 'lack of integration', finds report – That inaccuracies are rife in medical records surprises Pigeon not a bit. That many of those who spotted them reported seeing details of treatment or conditions they’d never had is a bit more puzzling. A Healthwatch report says “better interoperability” is the answer. So it’s that easy, huh?
Belgian HealthTech Cavell raises €1.5 million to make healthcare more efficient and patient-centered – It takes a while to get to the point here so Pigeon will cut to the chase: Cavell is an ambient scribe. Also, you probably don’t need to announce you’re making healthcare more efficient and patient-centered. Spoiler: if you’re trying to make it less efficient, it’s probably not going to go well for you.
Groundbreaking AI trained on de-identified patient data to predict healthcare needs – This one’s big. And we don’t just mean the dataset. The Foresight generative AI model, built by experts at Kings, is being scaled up to predict health outcomes across a much wider (we’re talking national) cohort. While it’s easy to see the benefits, there’s some noise coming from the negative voices in the room too.
npj Digital Medicine: Rethinking clinical trials for medical AI with dynamic deployments of adaptive systems – AI evolves fast, says a new review of the research, which suggests it's no longer good enough to test, validate and call it a day. An ‘adaptive-trial’ approach could be the answer to ensuring safety in the long term.
AI-driven heart scans speed up diagnosis and save millions – A success story emerging out of the NHS’s use of Heartflow, which uses AI to analyse 3D images created from CT scans. Deployed over 56 hospitals in the past 4 years, the tech reduced the need for invasive angiograms by 7%.
Belfast Digital Twin Centre to fast track industrial adoption of deep tech – The UK finally opens its long promised launchpad for digital twin technology, with the aim of driving adoption in a range of industries. And yet, no mention of healthtech (in case you were looking…). So how long until we see the potential of digital twins in healthcare realised? Well, since you asked, we got Sanome’s Benedikt von Thüngen on the pod to chat.
